Caithness and island players unite for opening fixtures

On Saturday, our U18s joined forces with girls from Orkney RFC and Shetland RFC to take to the field as The Vikings, facing a Lochaber/Oban/Highland combination at Ross Sutherland.

With no chance for a pre-season training day, there was always going to be a bit of a challenge getting everyone together and building team chemistry. From the very first whistle, the girls showed just how quickly rugby can bring people together. Led by captain Shannon (Shetland), supported by vice-captains Katherine (Orkney) and Rhona (Caithness), the Vikings gelled brilliantly and put together some excellent rugby.

There were plenty of tries throughout the game, with Caithness players Jess (2), Leigh (1) and Rhona (1) all crossing the whitewash. After a brief warm up, Rhona found range with 5 conversions

Our U16s also joined with Orkney RFC with debutant Robyn scoring a try. They played a strong back n forth match but unfortunately for them, Lochaber had a strong burst towards the end of the second half and ended the game 54-17 Most importantly, it was a fantastic afternoon of competitive rugby played in the right spirit.

Credit to our opposition for making it a great contest, and to all the girls for showing respect, determination, teamwork and a real love for the game.
